La légende des Black Devils

1st Lt. H. H. Raynor briefs his platoon of 5-2 prior to setting out on a night patrol into no-man’s land. Note blackened faces and hands. Anzio Beachhead, Italy, April 20, 1944.

After his prodigious exploits in the Apennine mountains between December 1943 and January 1944, the First Special Service Force land on the Anzio beachhead and settled on the west bank of the Mussolini Canal in the positions of the 39th Engineer Combat Regiment and from the first night, the 1st Regiment already organized his first night patrol east of the canal, behind German lines.

To the east of the Anzio beachhead, the position of a German officer becomes almost unbearable. In his diary he wrote. “American parachutists – Devils in Baggy Pants – are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can’t sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next. Seems like the black hearted devils are everywhere….”

This note, long attributed to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment is actually destined to the First Special Service Force and the nickname of “Black Devil” is awarded to the Forcemen. The most logical explanation for this confusion is that the lines of the 504th and FSSF were close for a long time (the FSSF monitored the Mussolini Canal to the east and the 504th PIR northeast) and both units were wearing similar baggy pants, but the 504th did not or little night excursion. The other explanation is that the 504th PIR was already known and distinguished by color: White Devils, Blue Devils and Red Devils.

In any case, this German officer did not survive the battle of Anzio because his newspaper was later discovered among his personal effects. He and his unit were probably over-run by the FSSF at the beginning of the campaign.
