Each year, the 509th Parachute Infantry Association organizes meetings with active members of the regiment, Vietnam or Cold War veterans or veterans of the unit who fought during the Second World War.

John Devanie, who was part of the 509th Pathfinder team during Operation Dragoon is a association member, he was also vice president and president of the association and tries to attend each of these meetings.

September 2014 was a very special meeting for him. A member of his unit was going to visit him. This member never attended a meeting and had rare occasions to meet former members of his unit after the war.

This veteran is none other than Theodore Houghton, another member of this Pathfinder Team ! John and Ted were parachuted near Tanneron (close to Grasse) on August 15, several days from where they were supposed to be.

The two friends were able to join the main body of the Combat Team in the very 19 August after passing through the German lines and brought back several prisoners. Their leader, Daniel DeLeo, had been wounded in the head during the jump and had suffered a cranial trauma without knowing it.

Two days later, the 509th Combat Team headed east on the Riviera and seized a series of hills in La Napoule where the enemy defenses protecting Cannes were installed.

On August 21, John, Ted and three (or four - Charles Petty, Warren McGee, Frank Sweetitz and ...) other pathfinders are sent to ‘Castel Hill’ to serve as forward observer for naval artillery. Through their binoculars, they spot a rail gun firing on American positions. At the same time that they give the information, the Germans have also spotted them and triggered by the mortar barrage on their position. John is seriously wounded in the leg and arm. Ted is also wounded, as Warren McGee and Charles Petty. Frank Sweetitz is killed by a mortar shell.

This is the end of the war for John. He spent 13 months in the hospital. Petty joining the unit in the Maritime Alps as well for Ted.

John and Ted had not seen each other in 70 years since August 21, 1944 on Hill 84.

What a great commentary about that time during the war. Ted(Theodore), is my father-in-law and remembers the rail gun attack clearly. He said that every time a certain US observation plane flew over the coastline the railgun would pull back and whenever it flew back over the water the railgun would come out and resume shooting again. Ted had been carrying the radio at the time but was not the radio operator. He began trying to contact someone to keep the plane flying over land! When the shell hit that wounded him he remembers being in the air and it felt like he was floating with absolutely no sound. I’m thinking this could easily have been a cause for a lot of his hearing loss.
So nice that Ted and John DeVanie were able to meet again. We have great pictures and audio of their hours long visit in Harrisburg, PA.
