Bien sûr, Yarborough n'a pas commandé le 2/504th PIR jusqu'à la fin de la guerre. Il se fera même remplacer bien avant la fin de la campagne de la Sicile.
Yarborough est sans doute celui qui a fait sauter les codes de conduite de l'armée et qui en a développé pour une toute nouvelle arme. Prenons par exemple la tenue de saut M1942. C'est lui qui l'a créé. Les bottes de saut, c'est lui qui les a développés et le brevet de saut que nous connaissons tous, c'est lui qui l'a dessiné.
Le Lt. Col. William P. Yarborough, l'un des pionniers de l'Airborne se voit confier le commandement du 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment de la 82nd Airborne Division en Afrique du Nord, peu avant la campagne de Sicile. Contrairement au 2/509th PIR, la division n'a aucune expérience du feu et les deux unités seront maintes fois en concurrence, la 82nd s'octroyant la plupart des faits d'armes à l'instar du 509th qui fut parfois confondu avec ladite division.
Le 2/504th PIR est sans aucun doute la première unité à avoir ses tenues camouflées à la chaine et à avoir des insignes de casque à l'échelle d'un bataillon tout entier. Il est vrai que des initiatives personnelles ont été rencontrées en Sicile ou en Italie au sein de la 82nd Airborne, mais jamais à l'échelle d'un bataillon.
L'idée de camouflé des tenues de sauts était déjà apparu en Angleterre ou des troopers avaient badigeonnés leurs tenues au pinceau à la peinture OD (Olive Drab) cassant les traits droits de la tenue.
La particularité du 2/504th en Sicile et celle du camouflage de ses casques - dont certains survivront jusqu'à la fin de la guerre - reprenant les formes et les couleurs des casques allemands de la 1er guerre mondiale qui ne fut vu dans aucune autre unité. Par-dessus devait être peint une croix de vie (ankh) Egyptienne pour être reconnu des autres bataillons du régiment.
L'idée du camouflage à la chaine, viendra, comme vous le savez, au moins d'août 1944 lorsque le conseiller de la First Airborne Task Force, le Lt. Col. Yarborough (et oui encore-lui !) proposera au General Frederick de camouflé ses parachutistes de peintures vertes et noires. Ce sont alors plus de 3000 parachutistes qui verront leurs tenues, casques et parfois armes, camouflés. Au pistolet à peinture cette fois-ci.
Of course, Yarborough did not command the 2/504th PIR until the end of the war. It will even be replaced long before the end of the campaign of Sicily.
Yarborough is undoubtedly the one who blasts the codes of conduct of the army and is developed for a brand new weapon : Airborne. Take for example the jump suit M1942. He created it. The jump boots; he developed it and the jump wings that we all know ; he designed it.
Lt. Colonel William P. The 2/504th PIR is undoubtedly the first unit to have its suits hand-made camouflaged at the chain and to have helmet insignias at the scale of an entire battalion. It is true that personal initiatives were encountered in Sicily or Italy within the 82nd Airborne, but never at the scale of a battalion.
The idea of camouflaged jumps was already present in England or the troops of whitewash their outfits with OD paint (Olive Drab) breaking the straight lines of the uniform.
The particularity of the 2/504th in Sicily is the camouflage of its helmets - some of which will survive until the end of the war - taking again the forms and colors of the German helmets of the Great War that was not seen in any other unit.
